Seven Candles is the first of a three book series,
The Reclaiming of Haven. It is a Christian alternative to books like
Harry Potter, Eragon, etc. It is filled with wizards, magic spells
and dragons but is attempting to show these dark arts in their true
light, evil. Alaric was the ruler of ancient Haven, when his people
turned on him and killed his son. He vows to leave but before doing
so he calls his land and the surrounding nations to a feast. All
but seven men and their families from his land refused to attend
the feast. He gives each man a unique necklace and tells them that
his son would one day return to rule and that a messenger would announce
his coming. This book follows the beginning of a journey made by
these seven men's descendants. Hundreds of years later when the story
has turned to legend, the messenger comes. He tells all the land
that the ruler's son is returning to reclaim his land. Along the
way, he finds the seven men's descendants with the necklaces. He
tells them to meet in a small town called Ammen, where Gavin, the
youngest of the seven men, lives. Alaric’s messenger gives
Gavin a book with words only he can read, this book tells them where
to go and what to do. After the seven men meet together they set
out on an epic journey to tell everyone that Alaric's son is coming
to reclaim his land and he is asking all who will follow to wait
on the west bank of the river Kedron. But their task is not unknown,
Rahm, the dark lord of Wormwood, has sent Watch Eyes, nonhuman creatures,
to stake out every town and to follow them, Rahm has also sent the
land's four wizards to reach the people before the seven men do and
to spread rumors and lies. When they reach the fourth city they are
to tell, the prince overthrows the king, they find themselves hunted
not only by soldiers but by a wizard. This wizard brings the chase
to a personal level, they are now running from their own fears. They
escape the fourth city, only finding themselves running again. This
time from thousands of six inch long winged creatures with scorpion
like tails. One of the seven men is stung, they now have to travel
slow, so it will be a day or more before they reach the next city
to get help. This book leaves them on the road to Darrington, the
nearest city. In the next books these seven men will encounter, wizards,
dragons and the very force of evil itself. We have seen first hand
that teenagers or young people in general are fascinated by the possibly
of possessing powers (witchcraft, wizardry). They enjoy reading books
on the subjects of ordinary people possessing powers, encountering
the unknown and achieving impossible tasks.
